Secrets From the Set: How Beyonce Became a Dreamgirl

01/02/2007 at 06:00 AM ET

Who knew there was such a thing as too beautiful? For her early scenes as Deena Jones in Dreamgirls, Beyonce Knowles, actually had to tone down her natural beauty. “Even though she just had a little mascara and lip gloss, she was just piercing through the screen,” says Francesca Tolot, Knowles’ makeup artist on the film. “So we had to take the mascara and lip gloss away and draw in some thick eyebrows to give her that young, ungroomed look.” Luckily for makeup addicts, Deena soon drops the natural look in favor of Dreamgirls fabulousness: Fake MAC eyelashes, lots of L’Oreal mascara and lipgloss, and straight up glitter in lieu of eyeshadow. “Diana Ross, Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren and Twiggy” were all inspirations, according to Tolot. Tell us: Are you looking forward to seeing Dreamgirls? Have you seen it yet?

Unfortunately I haven’t seen the movie…..yet, but I can’t wait to see it. I really want to see her development as an actress and how she has grown as an artist, although I already know she’s a true star.

Not planning on seeing it. But I think it’s sad that one has to down thier look for a movie. If she was too beautiful for the part then she shouldn’t of got that part.

I saw Dreamgirls and loved it. Everything about it was entertaining. Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx, Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson were all amazing in their parts. I got goosebumps when Jennifer did her ‘big’ number.

I saw Dreamgirls and loved it. Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson were all amazing in their roles. I actually got goosebumps when Jennifer sang her big numbers. I am a big fan of Idol, and so happy to see so many of these kids doing so well.

I saw the movie and LOVED it! Beyonce looked dazzling throughout the movie with all her transformations, but it was nice for a change to see her more natural look at the beginning. Jennifer Hudson was stunning in her performance- everyone was great.

I thought the film was great! I also found it fascinating that heavy eyebrows were used to make Beyonce look plain whereas Brooke Shields, for example, looks so terrific with heavy brows. It just goes to show that there is not one “look” that’s best for everyone—& even celebrities forget that on occasion!

No, because it’s not right that Eddie and Jamie could act their roles without needing to gain or lose weight. It’s just another pic where the focus becomes the female stars’ waist and eyebrow size. I’d rather watch Fantasia’s story on Lifetime for free.
