Jewelry For a Cause: Blood Diamond Bracelets

While promoting their new film Blood Diamond (opening today), the members of the cast, including Jennifer Connelly, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Djimon Hounsou, have been wearing rubber bracelets that say either “Blood Diamond” or “Clean Diamond.” After filming a movie about how so-called “conflict diamonds” financed the brutal civil war in Sierre Leone during the nineties, DiCaprio has sworn off buying diamonds, and Connelly tells PEOPLE that she recently wore Bulgari diamonds recently only “because they are certified not to be conflict diamonds. You can always ask your jeweler if a diamond is certified conflict free or ‘clean’.” The rubber bracelets help raise awareness of the human rights issue connected with diamond mining and are available for only $2 on Amnesty International’s website.

regina

it might be for a good cause, but i am so sick of this rubber bracelets already. they look cheap and are not a sign of style. somebody come up with another idea, pls!

Kay

I happen to think that purchasing something for a good cause is ALWAYS stylish. Also the point of doing the rubber bracelets is so that people like me (and most of us) who have a limited budget, can purchase them and have a part in raising funds for a GREAT cause.

I think they’re great. I saw the film and am going to buy them to give to my friends, Djimon models it well!!! Right on Amnesty!

Lara

I disagree with Regina – they look great on everyone and it’s good to know that people care about a good cause.

These bracelets are absolutely wonderful! I already own four! It is excellent that people like Djimon Hounsou are working for such an important cause. It is also great that he stars in a movie that will support the end to blood diamonds. I have already seen “Blood Diamond” and I encourage you to do the same. It was completely moving and truly will change your whole outlook. I cannot express my feelings about how great these bracelets are and how thrilled I am that others are learning about the issue. A piece of jewelry can honestly change lives, whether it is in a positive way or a negative way. Help make it a positive way by purchasing a bracelet!
