Get The Look: Little Black Dresses

11/01/2006 at 06:01 PM ET

It’s the classic linchpin of a woman’s wardrobe — casual or fancy, the little black dress is perfect for every occasion. But finding the right one that marries fashion and functionality, trend and timelessness can be trickier than it seems. And of course, putting your own fashion fingerprint on it is essential. We love that Rachel Bilson (left) paired a tough leather jacket with her sweet and swingy Dolce & Gabbana for a fresh and unique take. Inspired by this and other trends in our Little Black Dress Gallery, we picked a few of our favorites for sale online. Click through to shop all the hottest little black dresses.
THE COVER-UP (as seen on Rachel Bilson, left)
We may not be able to afford her exact dress, but you can get Rachel’s look with this $50 frock from J.C. Penney and cropped leather jacket, like this faux-leather blazer from Target, $30.

Faux-leather from Target? I don’t think so.

I am always surprised at the people who comment on these things, and their lack of understanding reality. Not everybody lives in Los Angeles or the O.C. Most people live on average incomes and live in the suburbs, and WORK, instead of driving around Mercedes Benz and spending mommy and daddy’s money. “Faux leather from target” is a much more realistic purchase than spending $300 on a real leather coat from a fancy store. Plus, it looks the same, and a cow didn’t have to die to make it. And Rachel Bilson looks gorgeous. If no one had pointed it out, everyone would just assume she spent a ton of money on this outfit from some shop on Rodeo Drive! It makes sense to spend less and look just as great as you would if you spent $800 instead of $80.

Beth – I live on the East coast, support myself and my father is deceased – so no living off his cash. My point is, I’ll do without before I by faux anything from Target.

Cute dress! Good for you Beth, I so agree! I’m glad there are other people out there that WORK on a average income and don’t have a problem buying clothes from Target!

You’d go without before buying faux from Target? Really? I feel kinda sad hearing that.

And Rachel looks gorgeous in the dress.

I really like this look! I love the big buttons on the jacket. To be honest, I think the jacket makes the dress look better than it would by itself.

Jessie on

she looks amazing in this! good choice

Rio on

I think she’s quite stunning.

As always, great choice for Rachel. I love the combination.

she has the long and slender legs to show off this dress in but seems like a kid with the sucker in her hand.
