You cannot just throw insults at thin people. Keira Knightley has been that thin since she was a child. She has always been that shape, it's just genetics a lot of the time. Yes, some actors and actresses do horrible things to lose weight, but you can't just accuse all thin people of being unhealthy. It really isn't fair to call thin people disgusting or sick. Thin and anorexia, along with skinny and bulemia are not synonyms. It's be much better to say that anorexia is terrible, or bulemia is bad instead.

i think that there is way too much focus and interest in these stick-thin insects, however saying that i am 5'4 and a UK size 2 (rarely a 4) and can count a few of my ribs through tops and see my hipbones.

i am a teen and have written to many magazines and also have studied the affect of media on women and younger women on weight issues and dieting.

i will admit i do fast and diet and exercise alot and watch what i eat but it isnt because of this, i admit that wanting to look thinner was something to do with it at the start but now its more of being able to look in the mirror (without bursting into tears) i do think, that even though the celebs looking like this didnt have anything to do with how i want to look and my weight/size as personally they look revolting, but i do know younger people do and they really look upto celebs and literally worship them.
i think that if only everyone stopped making such a huge deal - as in splashing them across the covers and promoting models and stories about dramatic weight loss etc. it may make a slight difference to future generations, however like many things -- its too late,

many people just strive for perfection, however they also strive to look like these, if i could count the times i have walked into a shop and seen girls my age -16 and younger to even 6 they look in amazement about the skinny celebs and most wish they looked like that, rich, famous, skinny, popular and to be honest i think media does play a huge role in this debate.
my advice -- STOP PUTTING THESE IMAGES EVERYWHERE

when i check my BMI, i'm just nice, right weight for the right height.
but i still get people saying behind my back that i'm overweight.

"c'mon," i'd tell them if i could. "get over yourself".

the best is to know yourself. come on, people! -have the confidence in yourself and stand up for your body! if you eat right (hey, there's nothing wrong with a piece of chocolate once in a while; i love it), and play sports (let's not think of it as 'exercise'; make it fun!), forget the rest of the stinking population.

be yourself! don't let others lead your life. take control by doing what's RIGHT, and not by following the herd-mentality.

I studied fashion design and the first thing I was taught was the human body dimensions... and how a designer MUST alter its natural proportion in order to let his design shine.( Reality: the size of the head enteres 8 times in the body length DESIGNERS REALITY : the size of the head enteres 10 times on body length...they add 1 extra-part to legs ,3/4 extra part to torso, and 1/4 extra to neck length)

So in scratch looks fantastic , but when designers take this design to real models , the ask for extra skinny and tall girls ,just to look like their paper drawing, THAT`S NOT POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I think that we should start blaming on designers teachers , that teach wrong human proportions. and then continue with the full chain... designers that "undersize"sizes in order to use less fabric( so a real 6 doesn`t fit on an actual 6 , but a 10...she stops eating to go back to what she thinks is a 6, )

Ok. I Have a friend that is very skinny (90lbs. about 5'6"). I don't think that she is anorexic, but she doesn't eat very much. You can see her bones like around her waist. All of her family and her frinds like me are really trying to help her get in a better eating habbit. This all got started because her parents got divorced. Her mom didn't have much money so she thought that not eating as much as she should would help her mom out a bit with that. She got into the habbit quickly and started losing weight. She was afraid to get "fat" and kept losing weight. I really don't know what she is going through because I've never been like that. I just really don't see how she could do that. She has now started to realize her problem and is trying to eat more but is still afraid to gain a couple of pounds. I hope that she can keep gaining weight so she could just be normal.

I'm 5'5" and weigh about 97 pounds. and the truth is i could care less. i eat when i want to and i dont eat when i dont want to. i eat healthy now and lots of fruit and i always eat 3 meals a day. i know that that weight could be considered borderline anorexic, but for some people like me thats just the size they are. My mom noticed that i've become the smallest i have ever been in my life (even though the largest i ever was 112 lbs and i would whoppers and double cheese burgers everyday for lunch) but i fit in a size 2 and sometimes a 0. i dont look sickly and my upper body is naturally boney. but my point is people like nicole richie have a eating disorder cuz i am naturally small and for my height, even tho i am slightly underweight i dont look that sickly. even kate bosworth who weighs 105 and is the same height as me looks extremely sickly compared to me so its obvious shes trying to hard to be a size shes not meant to be. i think the media should leave these stars alone because its not only hurting young girls, but its not helping them get better as well.

More and more girls are start to think: "am i overweight?", "i need to lose this weight", "my body is disgusting" all they want is to look how society tells them to look.On one page you have a picture of an extremely skinny girl and on the next you have a fat picture of them saying how fat they are. The media is giving mixed signals. I know I'm not the tiniest thing in the world but i do wish I looked like them. Bones are what makes you beautiful. All they can see is the fat, even when there isn't any fat at all.Life is an image contest.

One more thing. If I have to read or hear one more time that Marilyn Monroe was a size 14 or 16 as justification for being overweight or a chide to those who are underweight, I think I'll puke.

A size 14 in Marilyn's era is not even close to a size 14 by todays standards. There is no accurate sizing anymore for women's clothing. Sizing these days are determined by the fashion industry who likes to woo women into buying their clothes based off of the number on the tag. A size "8" in some fashions can equal a size "14" in other fashions.

Marilyn's measurements would put her roughly in a size "6" in today's fashions. She was an absolutely stunning icon, and I look forward to going back to the days when I see "big" hips to match the big breasts as the celebrated ideal.

I modeled from age 5 into my twenties, what got me was being told I was over weight when I weighed in at 95lbs., it's not the models as much as the people behind them, designers etc....

I left a career that tried to kill me and I don't regret it.

I think the fact People is bringing attention to this issue is wonderful. More magazines whould follow suit. This is how you and I learn about symptoms to look for in our friends and family, this gives us the facts to stage and intervention if needed. It also helps those who suffer from eating disorders realize they are not alone and for some (not all) women this could help them want to help themselves. My mother battled anorexia and bulemia all her life and she died in her sleep from it at age 46. She left three kids and a husband behind. She hid it so well that we didn't even know until it was too late. So props to you People for exposing the issue and getting the facts out there. I wish I would have read this article when I was younger so that maybe I could have saved my mothers life! To all the girls out there dieing to be thin, please realize there are people out there that care about you, love you and want to help you help yourselves. Don't be another statistic and get the treatment you need. If not for your sake, do it for those who love you, who you'll leave behind full of grief and sadness when you die....because you will if you don't get help.

i really belive there's a pressure to be thin...i recently started modelling myself.everytime i go to the agency they tell me:you must get a little bit thiner.but i'm fine with myself.if getting thinner is necessary to find more jobs...then im willing to give up my dream(ive been dreaming to be a model since i was 5:D).my point is...people should feel good as they are...and EAT healthy and work out.that's all you have to do. p.s. and what happened to ana is tragic. people should take anorexia more serious

I suffered from Anorexia few yr back. I am 5"7 and went down to almost a 100 lbs. I know how hard it is to come out of it. People judge very often and don't understand how sometimes people can go on weeks or even months without eating. Well. I don't know either but it happened to me. Is a disease, people seem to forget that sometimes!! Most girls worry about their weight.. I succeded with the support of dr's and fmaily! I know weight 126 lbs and lead a very healthy life style. I watch what I eat but also indulge myself with something good once in a while! Work out, eat healthy and don't ever forget that being healthy and cautious should always be number 1 priority! God Bless.. Nancy

The newspapers and magazines and now the computer are to blame.I have had my computer for 7 years and have tried desperately to find help for me to GAIN weight healthily, have not found anything, and am getting very skinny and it is ugly.I need help.I eat well.overeat really.Been to many doctors and tests, and they say nothing medically wrong. The computer with all its wonderful information,is bogged down with helping people or making people lose weight. How can I not find help for me to gain healthily.Doctors cannot help with nutrition.I am pretty good with nutrition,I have always been careful not to eat bad foods.I am 78 and went from a good looking size 12 to an ugly size 6 in this past 6 years.I went from 117 to 83 and still every time I get weighed, down more.I have changed my doctor three times in that time,I really thought I would get help from the computer.I put in the search and still they talk about how to lose weight.I ballroom danced 7 days a week for 45 years, after I quit a couple of years ago I started losing weight.I am also still a happy person.Alma Keenon. Please dont list my name.

Looking at the article, I noticed a familiar face. One of the girls in the picture starring at the dessert...I went to high school with her. It was heart breaking. I want to write to her and tell her that I'm thinking about her. I hope she is doing well. Melissa, I'm thinking about you.

Heather, I think many of us sympathize with those who struggle with bulimia and anorexia, but blame the celebrity-related industries and the celebrities themselves for promoting unhealthy thinness in those who are, sadly, role models for so many girls. But then, what's wrong with our country that we look to celebrities as role models!
