Los Angeles Goes Nuts For H&M

09/25/2006 at 04:31 PM ET

Someone in heaven has been listening to my prayers because Sweden’s uber-chic and inexpensive chain store H&M just opened up its first Los Angeles-area store in Pasadena. Local kids who had never once stepped into an H&M had clearly heard the buzz – a crowd of them slept over night in front of the store to be the first in on opening day. They weren’t disappointed and neither was I! My haul included two Pucci-style dresses ($39 each) and a sleek tweed skirt (only $29!). My buddy Amy went wild too. Her so-of-the-moment high-waisted jeans — $59 compared to similar pants at Miss Sixty for $300 — felt as exciting as sharing a dressing room with Garcelle Beauvais. I tried to go back for more yesterday, but the line to get in snaked around the block – all weekend long! Next occasion to camp out on their sidewalk all night: after having produced guest collections by Stella McCartney, Karl Lagerfeld and Madonna, H&M is also introducing a collection by Dutch designers Viktor & Rolf on November 9 – watch out for the huge Hollywood launch party.

I have gotten a lot of really nice things from there. I have gone to the H&Ms at New York, I got a really nice winter coat that was really cheap compare to other places and very fashionable… and I got a nice summer skirt.. the ones that were on style this year forgot the name around 40 dollars instead of 100 like some other places. I love that place. I hate the fact that they don’t have an online store.

I thought that the clothing was really bad quality and actually got waaay cuter stuff at Forever 21 around the corner for the same price point.

the thing that I really found unfavorable about h&m was that the fabric materials were super low quality and it even smelled like an old school Clothestime or Suzie’s Deals when discount clothing stores had that weird cheap material smell. all in all, I am super disappointed in H&M!!

I LOVE H&M! I bought a purse there last year, and have carried it soooo much since then. I love how unorganized the stores can sometimes be — it makes you have to dig through to find what you want, but finding that essential garment buried beneath it all is priceless :)

good for you. the lines scared me off. i think i’ll go when the hype dies down or when the one in beverly center opens.

I always visit the H&M in San Francisco, but I have yet to find a “must have” item there. I beg my husband to let me go in, him knowing it will be at least an hour that we are in there. I love to just browse the racks, floor by floor. I’ve bought a few cute shirts, but I’m still waiting for them to carry my perfect piece. Until then, I will continue to scour the racks and bask in the H&M glory of cheap clothes and endless fun!

I also bought some really cool items from the H&M store in New York. From tank tops to tank dresses, skirts, hats, hairthings & bracelets! I couldn’t believe how stylish and inexpensive their stock was and as soon as I got back to San Diego, I tried looking up the nearest location. Unfortunately, I found that the chain was only on the East Coast.

Thank goodness its made it’s way westward. It’s only a matter of time for the SD store….make it soon please!!!

Not crazy about the clothes. I bought a couple of tanks and they shrunk. What I do love…their accessories. Particularly the sunglasses… very inexpensive. They are ultra lightweight and in the latest styles. Oh I bought a black short sleeve polo for my old job there once and that was ok. Besides that I am not crazy about the store. I am 30 years old and I LOVE the shirts in Forever 21! But Eva Longoria said she does too, so I don’t feel like an old teen wannabe!!

i am going there this week with a girlfriend!

i think it is crazy that people have been camping out in front of the store that is alittle over the top and despret!

H&M rocks. I go to the one in Short Pump Town Center in Richmond, VA. I have bought great pair of jeans and tons of great trendy tops. However, this area is packed with children and we have been waiting and waiting for them to put their H&M children’s store there. It would do amazing!

I knew H&M when I was stationed in Germany and when I moved back to LA I wasn’t really missing it(there are so many good deals downtown), but then I went to NYC and bought a bundle. Now I live in Berlin and the BEST thing about it, 5 H&M within easy walking distance.

I was introduced to H&M in Europe! I went to a couple in Paris and one in London while I was studying abroad this summer. I came home to a disapointing locale where there are no H&M’s TEXAS! We need H&M’s in TX. I love that store!!

The lines were rediculous! I work down the street and thought Id make it into H&M during my break, no such chance! The plus was ALL weekend the whole store was 50% off! Ill make it later, probably this weekend. On a brighter note they are opening more in the LA area such as one in the Beverly Center, and one in the Santa Anita Mall in Arcadia. I predict the opening weekends of those will be 50% too! :) Hope it doesnt disappoint!

Well, I just really got a local H&M in my mall but no lines out the door for me! I love there stuff and was sooo excited when I found out we were getting one.

We have two H&Ms in Pittsburgh and I’m addicted. Clothes are so cheap and stylish. You can get all the latest trends at an affordable price,so you can buy frequently without spending your paycheck. My first H&M experience was in New York and then when I end up moving to Pittsburgh i got a great surprise when i walked into the mall and saw an H&M.(and then another on the South Side!!!!!!)
Its the budget-stylish-chic heaven for girls that have standard paychecks and don’t want to live on maxed out credit cards just to be In Style!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go steelers!

Good for everyone in the Los Angeles area…but what good is that for me. I live in Washington! They should at least set up an online store…

I went to the H&M in Oxford Circus in London. Got a belt wrapped shirtdress for 12pounds (about 24 dollars)- but I agree, they’re accessories are amazing! Got an extra wide canvas belt for about 3 dollars and some great linen scarves!

Kath on

Sorry to disagree with most people but H&M is really overhyped. Their clothes are not that inexpensive for how poorly made they are. Plus most of the fabrics aren’t very high quality and the sizes are not true at all. I’ll stick to paying more for higher quality classic pieces that will last a lot longer and be in style forever.

I am so thrilled that H&M is in my hometown of Pasadena!!! I have been a devotee since 2001. My first experience was in NYC. My friend and I visited three stores during our four days in New York. i had so much stuff that i had to buy a new suitcase to make it home. This past year I had a business trip in Minnesota and hightailed it to The Mall of America. Once again I went H& M nuts! This time though I walked out with more stuff for my kids than myself. I bought my daughter the cutest striped jeans and she wears them all the time. Now that H&M is in pasadena I cannot wait for the holidays when I can shop till I drop!!!! Now all they have to do is open one up in Atlanta and Orlando and I’ll be set!

this store sucks. i was one of those who waited in line when it opened in chicago on michigan a couple of years ago. i found a sweater. one sweater for 4 hours of waiting outside and then in line for the register. i’ve tried to find several things since then, but they never have my size (a 4 or 6) in anything that’s halfway decent looking. the clothes look cheap and not well made. great concept i suppose, but they really need to tweak some things there.

If you really want cool clothes for less go to ZARA and MANGO. These stores are cheap and have always the latest trends. You wont regret!

Why would anyone sleep outside overnight to go inside a store? It will still be there in a week. The store is okay, prices are decent, but the register lines are awful. The Boston store has been open for 5 years now and you still end up waiting a minimum of 10 minutes in line to pay.

I have bought items at H+M in the past like a great suede coat, but I have to agree that if you’re not going for the clothes, go for the accessories. Cheap, of the moment and really nice stuff.

I live in a big city in Germany, so there’s probably 5 H&M’s in walking distance. I think it’s great you can get the latest style really cheap. But watch out for the kind of material you buy, some is really too cheap. And I’ve had holes in some things- so it’s probably better to take a close look at what you’re buying. I have a super cute black sweater I bought some 6 years ago and it still looks great! It’s one of my favourite’s and you really can’t tell it’s that old!

Why would you wait in a line for 3 hours when you could just walk in a week later? I live in Pasadena and already the line is gone 4 days later…pathetic.

Jennifer on

Here in Europe we consider H&M clothes to be OK for what you pay – you expect them to last a few weeks. The styles are up to date but the quality will last about as long as the trend. Kids clothes are much better though. I couldn’t stop laughing on the way to NYC in 2000 as this woman told me it was the latest place to shop and people queued six blocks to get in!

Maine on

Why would anyone sleep outside just to get an article of clothing? Please. Are you really that desperate to go out and sleep on the ground just to get a “really cute jacket..OMG!” Besides, if you call half the stuff they have cheap…..you’ve got to be kidding me. I’m not some stuck up little brat trying to be like the Hollywood stars and get the “latest fashion.” I shop at botiques, and YES I’ll buy a shirt for $12! This is what I don’t understand….why are pants $60? If you pay $60 for a pair of pants, that’s why the designers are rich and you’re not. That’s why I laugh at shows like E! that say this is how you can dress like a star….”Jessica Simpson wore this shirt and she paid $150 and you can get this shirt for cheap at so-and-so store for ONLY $55. WOW…OMG…I think I’m gonna go buy me a shirt for $55. You’ve got to be kidding me. I hope you’ll be able to fit into that $55 shirt when you’re 50, hahahaha, and maybe you can be buried in that shirt too.

I’ve never been to H&M store because there is not one in my area, but I’ve heard that their merchandises are poorly made. Well, you get what you pay for!!!! Im going to chicago this weekend, and I will get to check out the H&M store that everyone is talking about.

I personally would rather pay more for a more quality merchandise because they are lasting, and the cut is also better…. and yes I know that the chance of running into someone who would wear the same outfit as I am would be smaller….after all it would be cheaper than buying inexpensive poor made clothes.

how about here in San Francisco?

My best buys were at the London area H&Ms and the Boston location. Yes, I went to at least 3 London locations and they were huge. The best buy I purchased were tank tops for $4 each. This was before they raised their prices, since most things then were under $50. I love that the clothing is good quality and stylish. Why spend $100 on a pair of pants when you can get it for a 1/5 of the price. I WISH H&M WOULD COME TO DALLAS!!! PLEASE!!! I know it would do well here in Texas, especially for those people who know about the store. You can easily drop $200 for 10 items of clothing. That’s a bargain!
