Would you wear it? Skinny Jeans

09/06/2006 at 05:46 PM ET

Skinny jeans — just the words alone seem to strike terror into the hearts of many women, but as it says in PEOPLE’s Fall Stylewatch issue, anyone can wear them — honest! Contrary to popular opinion, this look is not just for the waifish and slim of hip/thigh/butt. Within the skinny jeans world, there are a variety of cuts, lengths, and widths of the slim styles that can flatter any body type. And remember, it is all about proportion so consider wearing a longer, looser top with tighter jeans to balance yourself out.

1. If you are more petite, try a cropped style (like the J. Brand jeans, right) that really shows off a hot pair of heels.
2. If you are curvier, try a pair that scrunches around your ankle, which creates the same slimming illusion as a pair of bootcut jeans (see Kate Beckinsale, left).
3. If you want to make your legs look endlessly long, try a long pair of jeans pulled down over super- high heels.
4. If you don’t want to invest in designer options like the celebs, everyone from Target to the Gap is offering the look for less.

Tell us what you think: Do you like skinny jeans? Is this a trend you will try this fall?

The skinny jeans trend came and went very quickly in Europe, which seems like a pretty good indicator it will be a quick fad in the US too. It seems silly to jump on a bandwagon when the pants don’t flatter me. I had my friend snap photos of me in all the jeans I tried on. When seen from a distance the skinny jeans made my hips and butt look the biggest.

I would never wear those. I didn’t like them before and hate them even more now…. who wants to feel stuck in their pants?

I think that they look awesome if you’re tall and lean, but ALWAYS with stilettos….can pull off the flats if the legs are super slim though. It’s a fun look, I am totally tired of bootcut. fun to try something new!

I do not like the skinny jeans at all…I think they look horrible…I hope this trend disappears quickly, as it did in Europe.

I am 5’10” and wear about a size 29 or 30 jean. I have tried on lots of designer brands of the skinny jean and I look in the mirror and laugh at myself. Its like 1987!

I have a little rule when it comes to fashion: if I wore it the first time around, I don’t the second time.

Sorry– been there, done that (and did it better when I was 13, might I add!)

Skinny jeans are horrible!!! They are not flattering….might as well wear leggings with a button up shirt again. Helloooo 80’s nightmare! One style that should NOT be brought back.

I have yet to see one person that can pull this look off. You may think you look good in the skinny jeans…but you don’t! There is nothing sexy or flattering about them.

Ditto to the “OH HELL NO” post! Skinny jeans are not flattering, period. You’ll have to pry my bootcuts out of my hands … and even then, I think I’d rather go naked.

I remember making fun of anyone who wore TAPs (tight ankle pants) because they were unflattering and ugly.

Why the hell would I start to like them now, just because a bunch of celebs are trying to pull them off??? They’re nasty!

For anyone who likes them, try this: take a picture of yourself in a nice pair of boot-cuts, then take a picture of yourself in the TAPs. Compare the two pictures.
RESULTS: We’ll be seeing lots of TAPs in the garbage within the next few months.

Are today’s designers running out of creativity? I can understand bringing back a little bit of old, mixing it with new.. but the skinny jeans were a disaster then AND now.
