Jessica Simpson likes to keep us guessing — from her love life to her hairdos. The blonde bombshell lopped off several inches of her long tresses for a sleek, new bob that she debuted at last week’s VMAs. On this morning’s The View, Jessica compared bobs with host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, explaining her need to get rid of excess baggage (the hair, of course) and feel “lighter.” We’re sure the songbird will reinvent her image again before long, which won’t be too hard since she launched HairDo, an extensions line created with BFF/hair stylist Ken Paves. Before she started dating Nick Lachey, I hadn’t given Vanessa Minnillo or her wardrobe much thought. But now, thanks to her hot love life, the TRL cutie is suddenly in the fashion spotlight. Though she’s casual and adorable in her off time, her red carpet looks are another matter. She veers towards shiny, too tight (left, at the Emmys, and right, at the VMAs) fabrics, a look more fitting for a prom queen than a star on-the-rise. Here’s my completely unsolicited advice for Vanessa: Hire a stylist. It doesn’t have to be Rachel Zoe, but get a professional to help you play up that amazing body of yours in some beautiful designer duds. Or at the very least, ditch the sparkly satin. Everyone is going to keep comparing you to your boy’s ex, Jessica Simpson, who is known for her spot-on style. The good news is Vanessa’s hair and makeup already look lovely, and she has the ultimate accessory with Nick by her side. — Melissa Liebling-Goldberg

We knew that dark nails were going to be big this fall, but dark hair is sweeping Hollywood; former blondes Britney Spears (left) and Cameron Diaz (right) as well as redhead Lindsay Lohan (middle) have all switched to shades of chocolate brown. PEOPLE magazine’s Beauty Editor Elizabeth Lamonts explains, “the trend is about these celebs saying, ‘Summer is over. I’m ready for something different, darker, more daring.’ It’s about seeing all those great coats and cashmere sweaters in the stores and getting in the mood.” Now, we’ll just have to wait and see who else goes to the dark side this fall. Tell us: Will you go brunette for fall?
