Tell us: Will You Wear Cropped Vests?

08/29/2006 at 12:00 PM ET

Some fall trends seem easier to swallow than others– while ankle boots are causing a general panic, cropped vests seem like an easy way to incorporate the fall menswear’s trend into your wardrobe. Sure, they look great on Anne Hathaway (left) and Lucy Liu, but what is the best way for you to work them into your closet? Here are a few of our favorite ways to wear a vest, without looking like one of the boys.

1. Shorter vests look great layered over button down shirts (like Rebecca and Drew‘s) at work or over a tee-shirt to keep it casual on the weekends.

2. Try them with a longer shirt and skinny jeans or keep it fitted on top and pair with wide legged pants, for a Katherine Hepburn look.

3. The one shown here from Old Navy, $27, still seems feminine with all the lace trim.

What do you think? Would you wear a cropped vest? Or do you shy away from menswear styles?

No way, I would never wear a vest like that! I remember wearing that back in the 7th grade why would I want to wear something that I hated to wear back then now!

Love those vests! I have had cute one in dark grey wool with soft pinstripes that’s got a nice tight fit sitting in my closet for the last 8 years or so. I guess it was a good idea to keep it ;-). By the way – I already saw girls wearing those in London last spring and since I found the perfect victoriana-blouse to go with it there as well, this piece has had a heavy revival since then. The blouse is about hip-length, with small slightly puffy sleeves, and I love to wear that and the vest with very skinny jeans and ballerina flats.

Lovely! – but only on average-sized women (bust-wise). I am quite busty and they look ridiculous on me :(( Also, I think they make small-sized women (again, bust-wise) look very masculine.

I think vests are fantastic, and I already own a couple. For those who think that its not very feminine, well, its not, nor should it be. Fashion is heading into an androgynous/menswear period. Suspenders are even a trend this fall. Expect to see all the aforementioned items, as well as trousers, argyle, sweaters, turtlenecks, button-downs, plaid, tweed, and grunge.

i like it. i have one… but to each her own.

if you guys dont like it just say so, leave out the meanness, dissing and frustration. just take it out on your husbands when they get home (if you have one)

to emily who thinks people magazine tells her what to wear like “absolutely ridicolous vests” and soon “tuxedos”, remember you have free will. you can wear whatever you want sweetie.
