Ask The Experts: Beyonce's Hair Stylist Gives Us Tips

07/26/2006 at 03:42 PM ET

With her hectic summer record-promo tour, Beyonce is one busy superstar this summer, and her hair stylist Kimberly Kimble is in charge of keeping her hair looking fresh. We asked her to answer a few of your burning summer hair questions.

So how do you keep Beyonce’s hair looking wild and free, but not too crazy?

KIMBLE: Everything starts at the base– how you shampoo and condition the hair. Then, think about how you are going to blow dry and lay in the curls. I use different techniques when I blow dry. If the hair is going to end up full, you don’t want to straighten it too much, so try to leave some of the texture in. If you’re going for a straight style, of course, you have to straighten it with a flat iron to get it bone straight from the root to the ends. You need to put product in the hair that’s going to keep it shiny, silky and smooth and protect it from the heat.

What’s the deal with hairspray? If you use too much, the hair is hard and nasty, but if you don’t use enough, your curls won’t stay.

KIMBLE: Well, that’s the thing. In my line, I have a very light holding spray. It’s not too sticky, and you have to build on it to make it what you want it. It starts off with a light to medium hold, and you don’t have to have it super hard to make it lock in the curl. But you have to use the right curling iron, and the right technique to get the hair to curl right. It’s never just about the products, and that’s what most people don’t get.

How can you keep summer hair looking healthy?
KIMBLE: Summertime is always a great time for carefree hairstyles. You have to keep it well moisturized. If you also dye your hair, it’s a great time to boost the color. I usually take all my clients a little lighter in the summer, but you should use color-enhancing shampoos to keep the color rich. Look for products with sunscreen it and make sure to get a good color-treated shampoo and conditioner to help keep your color vibrant for the summer. Hair has the appearance of healthiness when the color is rich. The two I love are John Frieda’s shampoo and conditioner and Aveda’s line for color-treated hair. — Amy Keith

Beyonce is always beautiful as are plenty of countless starlets…….as for her hair she’s wearing what I wear…An invisable lace wig. People pay up to $1500 for these units but I sale quality units much cheaper….Stars can’t be the only ones to look flawless!
I always feel just as hot as Beyonce and so do my clients and it takes about 15 to apply and stays on my head for a week or more…most of the time I re-apply it myself or go to a stylist like some of my clients.

Those that wear hair extensions and tired of sitting in a salin and paying crazy amounts of money for them and sitting in the salon for hours….check it out!
If you don’t that’s completely understandable…it’s just not for you.
Some of my clients have gone through Chemotherapy so these undetectable, breathable, comfortable beautiful hair units are wonderful for them

Yes my hair is a lace wig, and my stylist Kim does it for me. But I wear them because alot of women in the industry are bald and I at least try and protect my own hair. Yours truly B.

I agree Beyonce wears Full Lace Wigs and none of her real hair is out. A full lace wigs is glued around the circumference of your hairline and no one can really tell if it is your hair or fake.

I can tell that lots of the comments above are made by white females who know little. B is a woman of colour. Her whole look is cultural. Weaves, braids, extentions and natural hair as well as sheer beauty are all part of our black heritage and have been for centuries. Only in recent years has the versitility of of these techniques crossed races and been made more widely available. But you all carry on with your sun beds and your fake tan, lip enlargements and bum inplants. We won’t say anything because thats your heritage. We need to embrace all safe beauty treatments as thats what we all want to be beautiful just like BEYONCE.
