Ask The Experts: Beyonce's Hair Stylist Gives Us Tips

07/26/2006 at 03:42 PM ET

With her hectic summer record-promo tour, Beyonce is one busy superstar this summer, and her hair stylist Kimberly Kimble is in charge of keeping her hair looking fresh. We asked her to answer a few of your burning summer hair questions.

So how do you keep Beyonce’s hair looking wild and free, but not too crazy?

KIMBLE: Everything starts at the base– how you shampoo and condition the hair. Then, think about how you are going to blow dry and lay in the curls. I use different techniques when I blow dry. If the hair is going to end up full, you don’t want to straighten it too much, so try to leave some of the texture in. If you’re going for a straight style, of course, you have to straighten it with a flat iron to get it bone straight from the root to the ends. You need to put product in the hair that’s going to keep it shiny, silky and smooth and protect it from the heat.

What’s the deal with hairspray? If you use too much, the hair is hard and nasty, but if you don’t use enough, your curls won’t stay.

KIMBLE: Well, that’s the thing. In my line, I have a very light holding spray. It’s not too sticky, and you have to build on it to make it what you want it. It starts off with a light to medium hold, and you don’t have to have it super hard to make it lock in the curl. But you have to use the right curling iron, and the right technique to get the hair to curl right. It’s never just about the products, and that’s what most people don’t get.

How can you keep summer hair looking healthy?
KIMBLE: Summertime is always a great time for carefree hairstyles. You have to keep it well moisturized. If you also dye your hair, it’s a great time to boost the color. I usually take all my clients a little lighter in the summer, but you should use color-enhancing shampoos to keep the color rich. Look for products with sunscreen it and make sure to get a good color-treated shampoo and conditioner to help keep your color vibrant for the summer. Hair has the appearance of healthiness when the color is rich. The two I love are John Frieda’s shampoo and conditioner and Aveda’s line for color-treated hair. — Amy Keith

I just wanted to say to the ladies that, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Beyonce is beautiful not because of her hair, makeup or clothing, but because she is a lovely woman created by the Almighty just like the rest of us. She seems to be a genuine individual who was raised to love and respect herself, and we should all follow suit no matter how we look on the outside. Once you love who you are your beauty will radiate just like B weave or no weave!

Ohh Jesus
People still talking about the beauty Beyonce’s hair?
Girls stop freaking out about it.!!
If she wears a wig or not, you have to know SHE GOT THE MONEY, DIN-DIN, AQUeh, dun-dun… So, if you don’t have the power (money) as she has, and the beauty, SHUT the F Up!
She is beautifull and rich! That’s All.
And losers cannot handle it, get over!

I agree with the “Just Admit It, It’s OK” Yeah Beyonce is beautiful regular hair or weave hair. The thing is that THIS is an article asking “how do you keep Beyonce’s hair looking wild and free, but not too crazy?” and the TRUTH is well, we use a lot of pieces or whatever to protect her hair, doing what the stylist said alone is not enough to protect your hair through all the styling that celeb’s go through…YES a lot of famous ladies wear weaves (and look good doing it!) but also BIG YES, they admit it freely, Jessica Simpson, & Brittney Spears included…YES Beyonce looks good, they just need to keep it real, or turn down the interview…

Hey ladies, Now yall know Ms.Beyonce is the you know what! She’s the total package. And as for her hair, guess what, it’s not a weave! And you can afford it. As a hair stylist let me tell you it’s the most realistic illusion you’ll ever see! Don’t get me wrong it’s not her hair. None of what you see is actually growing out of her own scalp. But it really does look like it even up close. Guess what I offer that service. Do you want hair like “B”? Then stop hating and come see me!

Mrs. D where are you? Are you in Los Angeles, I’d love to come and see you, cause yes…I’m not hatin’, I do want hair like B’s. I’m in the entertainment industry so it’s a non-issue whether or not your hair is yours or not, as long as it looks fabulous….!!!! Let me know how I can contact you!!

Lol that girl Ari is a trip.. Okay why is she trying to convince us that she looks as good as beyonce? I Mean so what! She really tried to describe herself light skin, long hair even how tall she was lol. I thought we were talking about beyonce’s hair. Those things that you named baby girl don’t make you pretty. You could still be ugly, chances are you are. Talk about how good you look and then start dissing beyonce. Any ways beyonce is beautiful wig or not. so many people wear wigs no matter what race they are. A wig don’t make you, you make the wig. If you are not attractive a wig isn’t going make you gorgeous. Beyonce works that weave or wig go girl!!

LADIES LETS NOT IDOLIZE A HUMAN BEING BECAUSE OF HAIR OR PHYSICAL APPEARANCE. ANYONE CAN LOOK AS BEAUTIFUL AS HER OR ANY OTHER ARTIST AS A MATTER OF FACT. FAKE HAIR OR REAL HAIR. DONT TRY TO RESEMBLE HER, BUT TRY TO BE AT YOUR BEST CUZ TRUST THEY’LL NEVER GIVE YOU THE REAL TIPS ON HOW SHE LOOKS THE WAY SHE DOES!

It’s true a lot of actress/entertainers where wigs and weaves. I, myself have shopped around as a professional stylist to find the best lace front and lace wigs for my clients, some are in the entertainment industry and are well known. The best that I have used is http://www.platinumfantasydesigns.com. They have been in business for a very long time and use exclusive materials, etc. The most realistic I’ve seen in lace wigs and I’ve seen many. Beyonce could be shaved bald and she would still have a beautiful face, figure, money, and success, so what do the haters have? Nothing.

Always Seeking Growth on

Honestly,Maybe a patron would not be interested in her advice, but as a stylist I know hair extensions are the real money makers in the hair industry and I am kind of dissapointed Miss Kimble didn’t share more. I desire for more clients to get that star appeal .Extensions aren’t bad at all if it is worn correctly!Oh Well, on to the next celebrity stylist.

Dawn on

I think I could speak for all the extension wearers. We as women want to look good, instead of trying the unknown we seek a professional opinion to master a look, not follow a person. We are all confidant and in our confidance we seek perfection and some of us want that star appeal not a speech on self esteem it is just hair!!!!
