Ask The Experts: Beyonce's Hair Stylist Gives Us Tips

07/26/2006 at 03:42 PM ET

With her hectic summer record-promo tour, Beyonce is one busy superstar this summer, and her hair stylist Kimberly Kimble is in charge of keeping her hair looking fresh. We asked her to answer a few of your burning summer hair questions.

So how do you keep Beyonce’s hair looking wild and free, but not too crazy?

KIMBLE: Everything starts at the base– how you shampoo and condition the hair. Then, think about how you are going to blow dry and lay in the curls. I use different techniques when I blow dry. If the hair is going to end up full, you don’t want to straighten it too much, so try to leave some of the texture in. If you’re going for a straight style, of course, you have to straighten it with a flat iron to get it bone straight from the root to the ends. You need to put product in the hair that’s going to keep it shiny, silky and smooth and protect it from the heat.

What’s the deal with hairspray? If you use too much, the hair is hard and nasty, but if you don’t use enough, your curls won’t stay.

KIMBLE: Well, that’s the thing. In my line, I have a very light holding spray. It’s not too sticky, and you have to build on it to make it what you want it. It starts off with a light to medium hold, and you don’t have to have it super hard to make it lock in the curl. But you have to use the right curling iron, and the right technique to get the hair to curl right. It’s never just about the products, and that’s what most people don’t get.

How can you keep summer hair looking healthy?
KIMBLE: Summertime is always a great time for carefree hairstyles. You have to keep it well moisturized. If you also dye your hair, it’s a great time to boost the color. I usually take all my clients a little lighter in the summer, but you should use color-enhancing shampoos to keep the color rich. Look for products with sunscreen it and make sure to get a good color-treated shampoo and conditioner to help keep your color vibrant for the summer. Hair has the appearance of healthiness when the color is rich. The two I love are John Frieda’s shampoo and conditioner and Aveda’s line for color-treated hair. — Amy Keith

Beyonce is MIXED ya’ll. She probably really did get good hair from her mom. Even if she does wear a wig/weave, she’s probably protecting her beautiful hair underneath, the smart thing to do.

I agree with a lot of yall… is hard to grab and check your insecurities when looking at a woman who’s b-day is four days earlier than mine, be so beautiful and so successful. God has truely blessed her and I have to remind myself sometimes to be thankful for what you have… B helps me be proud of black women my age and remind me that the sky is the limit. You are as beautiful as you want to be and we should let it shine from the inside out. She is a beautiful woman with or without weave and I think she should enjoy her blessing :)

Has anyone ever worn wigs before? I checked out the It seems like a lot of stars wears wigs. Has anyone bought one from the website? Do you have to have it professionally put in? FYI—B is pretty regardless of fake or real real hair. Everyone wears weaves now……don’t hate.

valeria your comment on 26th dec about people having their own opinion is a just one, but i think your more of a hater than a liker of beyonce due to your quick defence for ‘Hater’s’ daniella, and kim, who are quick to bring down Beyonce but they would’nt dream or consider slating the likes of Jessica Simpson, Britney spears, Christina Aguilera and so called other hollywood blondes who change THEIR hair colours more often than the weather. They blatently wear lace wigs and extensions.I guess their pardened for wearing fake cause their hair is naturaly straight? Women of colour are just merley wearing lace front wigs they developed for theatre as fashion! they’ve done for years! Holler!

Cher, Cristina Aguelerra, Jessica Simpson all wear extentions, weaves, wigs whatever. Its’ all part of being fabulous in Hollywood. Why do you think you see Paris Hilton with long hair one day and a bob the next. Get over it!!! It’s been done since the beginning of hollywood. I wish I had someone to style my hair everyday and if they add extentions then I’m ok with that. Aren’t we past the “its a weave” thing. If it looks good then does it really matter??????

Beyonce could shave her head bald and she would look better than 99 % of the women in the WORLD….the other 1% we already know is the bomb…….are any of you part of the 99% or the 1%……think about your own improvements!!!
